The 2004 Educational Grants given by the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts were awarded to Shara Goolsby, James Chapman, William Johnson and Thomas Johnson.
In the fall, Shara Goolsby will embark upon her sophomore year at the University of New England in Portland Maine where she is majoring in marine biology.
Shara spent a very active freshman year at the University. In addition to performing a work study job in the Registrar’s office, she became a member of both the outing club and the cardio club. She played intramural football and indoor soccer. She also served as the treasurer of her class.
Shara made the Dean’s List her freshman year. After graduation, she hopes to work in aquariums where she would like to create marine ecosystems and teach others about the aquatic world.
In the fall, James Chapman will enter his sophomore year at the University of Vermont where he is majoring in business administration. During his freshman year at the university, he made the Dean’s List and also won a position on the varsity baseball team.
A clear opponent of the prevalent practice of “outsourcing, James wrote in his application that he hopes his business training will help him to “keep jobs in the United States.” He also wrote that “he hopes to be an employer who will maintain fairness and honesty in the treatment of his employees.”
James possesses a strong religious faith and has been continually active with the youth group at his church in Wareham. He is also very civic minded. He has tutored at a local elementary school, helped at the Ronald McDonald House and assisted with the Red Cross.
In the fall, William Johnson will enter his junior year at Wentworth School of Technology where he is majoring in computer science. William has attained a very impressive academic record during his two years at Wentworth, having made the Dean’s List every semester.
For William, his future vocation is very much combined with his avocation. He is very involved with computers. He fixes his friend’s computers when they break down. Among his enjoyments is bike riding and taking walks in rustic areas.
In the fall, Thomas Johnson will enter his sophomore year at Columbia University in New York City. At Columbia, Thomas is majoring in literature.
Thomas is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He is also a co-founder of the free speech club. In addition, he participated in intramural football and floor hockey his freshman year.
Thomas has been a civic leader in his community where he has coached at youth hockey camps and served as a Special Olympics coordinator. He plans to enter entering law school upon graduation.
